Alan Wake’s New American Nightmare
Hej hej anon. People actually read this thing? Surprising.
No, we don’t have much information about him and almost everything I have in purely head canon so far. What we know for sure by now is that Mr. Scratch and Alan are two separate entities and that Sam Lake has basically stated that Scratch is demonic.With his character we still don’t have much development either and I’ve had to extrapolate from what we do know. We’ve seen him both calm and vaguely menacing (Alan Wake) and we’ve seen him as manic (Alan Wake’s New American Nightmare trailers).

I personally am of the belief that his natural state is violent and manic but he is able to suppress it when needed. I find him similar to John Simm’s Master if you are familiar with Doctor Who. I don’t think he quite understands the concept of time either and he treats almost everything as new and exciting. I think he’s easily bored but easily satiated.

The way we’re playing with it now is that Zane at first tells Alan not to mind him but by American Nightmare he has become the antagonist. What happened exactly? (Though we’ll of course know soon. We might change our canon to accommodate it but we don’t know yet.) So while Alice was in the dark place she was held captive by Mr. Scratch. When Alan was able to free her and she came out of the lake she had no memory of what happened. So Mr. Scratch assumed his role as Alan Wake. A parallel I’ve found between Scratch and the Master as the Master also took on the role of Harry Saxon. Mr. Scratch intends to play it well but he soon discovers it’s no fun that way and he starts to resent it. The veneer starts to crack and he let’s his natural state start to assume control.
So he starts to act more and more out of character until he just discards the disguise. Alice starts to recover her memories of the dark place and starts to distrust Scratch until she realizes that he is not in fact her husband. Coming to this conclusion she tries to escape but Scratch will never allow it. Everything that was Alan’s is now his and he’s possessive, petty and jealous. And I think that’s as far as we’ve come.

Just as I was about to post this I was sent the link for the new trailer. And that is exactly how I thought he’d be when he was free to act like himself. The dancing even reminds me of the Master dancing to ‘I Can’t Decide’.
I forgot I followed this on my personal blog and tried to reply from there.
I would just like to point out how fucking SPOT ON I was about the knives, blades and his crazy dancing. I knew he’d have a little case of blades for all sorts of uses. Though my guess was a black leather roll up. I love the feeling of vindication.
Though I’m sure it won’t/can’t be confirmed in game I’m also sure he’s a fan of erotic asphyxiation.
/Alice awoke in start and was covered in a cold sweat. She glanced over and saw Alan asleep next to her in the bed. She shook her head and sighed. Every night this past week since she had woken up in Hartman’s lodge she had been having weird dreams.
Not just weird- but terrifying. Dreams of Alan tracing knives through her flesh and parting it as easily as tissue paper fell apart in rain. It was making it more and more difficult to get some rest. She sat up and was surprised she didn’t bother him in doing so. Usually he was such a light sleeper.
She brought her hands up and covered her eyes with her palms and without thinking about it she took Alan’s closest hand to her in hers./
/Scratch groaned as he came to. The grip on his fingers was too tight. He didn’t exactly need sleep but he enjoyed it nonetheless. He was fond of the little adventures and trips down memory lane his subconsciousness could bring. He opened one eye and blearily looked up at his “wife”. She was staring down at him intently, like she didn’t quite recognize him. That probably should have set alarm bells off but instead he stretched out lazily before he spoke./
Alice? What’s wrong?
/Alice could feel how hard her nails dug into the back of Alan’s hand. She’d at least eave deep crescents if she didn’t draw blood. She was trying to reassure herself that he was real - here - and not a figment of her imagination. He wasn’t dark haired man who laughed and mean her scream./

Improvements/goals as an rper: Actually keep up and make time for it all. Learn to expand from long/detailed into quick and dirty exchanges as well. Focus on keeping character and exploring the hows, whys and thought processes of each.

/Scratch grunted at the sudden pain in his lip. Without missing a beat he reared back and slapped her across the face. It was amusing to him that this violence between them only served to future his lasciviousness. He couldn’t help the smile that tugged at his mouth when he observed the split lip he had caused. Not the first one and it certainly not the last one in this godforsaken courtship. He continued on like the last few seconds hadn’t happened because it knew it would drive her up the wall./

/Alice’s vision went white and she was thankful she had the wall the brace herself. When she was able to make out the man standing in front of her she could see the blood pool in the spaces between his teeth when he smiled. She didn’t need to touch her lip to know she was bleeding; she could feel it slowly drip down her chip. Unpleasantly prickly as edges started to dry.
From where Alice stood she registered an almost euphoric glow start to suffuse Scratch’s features. She could feel the hair on her back of her neck stand on end. He was watching her like she was something marvelous./
